Grants, which usually range between £500 and £1,000, are available to those who have finished their formal training, and are working full- or part-time, but need funds for special projects such as setting up a workshop, buying equipment, or for research and travel. The deadline date is 19 September 2008. For full details and an application form please write, enclosing a SAE, to Rachel Mackie, The David Canter Memorial Fund, c/o The Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Riverside Mill, Bovey Tracey, Devon TQ13 9AF. Esmée Fairbairn Foundation
The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation has launched three new funding programmes to add to those it has been running under its current guidelines, which have been operable since January 2008. The topics cover Food, a pilot programme of work in Northern Ireland, and a Finance Fund. The new Food Strand aims to promote an understanding of the role of food in enhancing the quality of life. The Foundation is interested in work that influences policy and practice across a range of food-related areas, enabling as many people in the UK as possible to access, prepare and eat nutritious, sustainable food. The budget is £3 million over the next three years. The Trustees expect to support a mix of practical projects that have wide significance, and some research and policy based work. Details of the new funding programmes are available via www.esmeefairbairn.org.uk/pr-template.html. A breakdown of the existing funding options from Main Grants and Strands is available via www.esmeefairbairn.org.uk/funding/index.html. You can also e-mail info@esmeefairbairn.org.uk.

The Joanies Trust
The Joanies Trust is seeking applications for grants in 2008. Grants can support projects working with young people, aged 11-25, within the UK. They average £1000 and applicants must be registered charities. Applications must show strong evidence of how closely applicants consult young people in developing their service, and for any community involvement or local financial support. The Trust will support about 30 charities with average grants of £1000. The Trustees receive ten times the applications they can support, so they underline that applications that are succinct and that give direct answers to the questions in the application form stand a greater chance of success. There is an application form available from here. The closing date for applications is 31 August 2008.

Heritage Lottery Fund - important grant programme information
'Young Roots' and 'Your Heritage' programmes
Due to the high number of applications received and strong competition for funding, HLF Wales are currently unable to accept any more applications to these programmes. They are however accepting applications under the revised 'Your Heritage' and 'Young Roots' programmes, both of which have a simpler application process and a 10-week assessment period. They will begin processing these applications from September 2008 and decisions will be taken in competitive batches. The revised 'Young Roots' and 'Your Heritage' application materials and extensive guidance are now available on-line. HLF still encourage all applicants to seek pre-application advice at the earliest stages of developing a project. Please contact the Development Team for more information on 029 20 343413 or email wales@hlf.org.uk.

Government
Inquiry calls for more self-sufficiency
The National Assembly for Wales should improve its voluntary sector funding by reviewing its funding criteria, simplifying applications and developing an online information service, according to an inquiry report released. The report recommends that the Assembly Government should fund four pilot projects in rural and urban areas to provide training and support to help small voluntary sector organisations become more self-sufficient.
Other recommendations:
· The private sector should be encouraged to help voluntary groups to become more sustainable, either by providing sponsorship or by lending staff with specific skills for short-term secondments.
· The Government, local authorities and other public bodies should treat the third sector as a strategic partner when planning, commissioning and delivering public services. (Source: Third sector)

Realising Rural Assets – Thursday 19 June 2008:
Hafod Hendre Building, Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells
Rural areas usually feel like the poor relation to urban areas – always losing out on funding, programmes and support because they don’t have the density of population, or easily identified deprivation. Well what about turning this on its head and saying: ‘Rural communities are their own destinies; they are their own best assets’?
This conference for Rural Wales, takes forward community ownership and management of local assets in the widest, most creative sense, to enable Can-Do Rural Communities. The conference will include contributions from Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones AM, WCVA Chief Executive Graham Benfield OBE and Deputy Minister for Regeneration Leighton Andrews AM.
There will also be sessions on the Scottish experience of community ownership, examples of the community-owned assets approach and a panel discussion on the next steps for Wales featuring a range of experts including Dr Kate Braithwaite MBE, Rural Programme Director of Carnegie Trust UK.
So if you want to be part of establishing a positive sustainable future for rural Wales, book your place at WCVA’s Realising Rural Assets Conference 2008. Click here for the full conference programme, and here for the booking form.

Giving and public fundraising
Forge a lasting relationship with donors on the web, says report
Charities should use the internet to woo people over time and improve the chances of persuading them to donate in future, according to a report from the Institute of Fundraising and online giving charity Missionfish. Passion, Persistence and Partnerships: the Secret of Earning More Online is based on interviews with 15 charities leading the field in the use of digital media, conversations with eight experts and the results of nfpSynergy's Virtual Promise survey of the ways in which charities use the internet, carried out last year.
The report, due to be published shortly, says few people go to websites to donate, so leading fundraisers are using the internet to develop relationships by sending email newsletters, developing interactive elements on their websites and making use of social networking sites. Once supporters are engaged, they can be persuaded to donate, it says. (Source: Third sector)
TIPS FROM THE REPORT
- Don't expect donors to just come to you; improve your online presence
- Use social networking websites to spread your message
- Use personal stories from staff and beneficiaries
- Treat the website as belonging to visitors, not to you: consider what they might want to see
- Use partnerships to provide software and online expertise.
Gift Aid campaign to promote claims on shop donations
Animal charity PDSA is running a Gift Aid Awareness Week to inform supporters that Gift Aid can be claimed on items donated to charity shops. The charity will use its awareness week, to promote the various ways in which donors can sign up for Gift Aid. These include filling in a form in store, or on the doorstep when items are collected directly from supporters’ homes, phoning the charity’s freephone helpline, or signing up online at www.pdsa.org.uk/shopgiftaid. The PDSA said it had raised almost £500,000 since it started claiming Gift Aid last year on items donated to its shops. The system involves contacting donors when the items they have donated have been sold to obtain permission to claim Gift Aid on the sale price. (Source: Third sector)
Website to help charities manage online tribute funds
Our Lasting Tribute has built a website to help charities create and manage their tribute funds online. The scheme, developed over the past two years by marketing agency Whitewater, allows donors to pay tribute to someone who has died, while raising funds for their chosen charity. Charities affiliated to the scheme are given a web page that allows donors to post photos and write journals dedicated to their loved ones. Visitors to the pages, which are usually accessed via the charity's home page, are able to leave tribute messages and make donations. (Source: Third sector)
